What type of gravel do I use for the base?

There are a few things that you should be sure to do before laying your pavers. First, the base material we recommend is locally approved road base gravel (6 inches for patios and walkways or 10-12 inches thick for driveways). After compacting it with a roller, place coarse sand on top of this layer prior to setting down the actual bricks.

Can I install pavers over concrete?

If your concrete is in excellent condition and you want to install pavers, then yes. You need an existing slab that slopes away from the house for drainage. Also, add a 1 inch bedding sand layer before setting the paver stones down on top of it all!

Do walls over 3′ need to be engineered?

Before you build a wall higher than 3ft, it is recommended that the structure be engineered by an engineer. In some cases this would even require fencing and railings around your garden. Always check with local building codes before beginning any construction project to make sure there are no restrictions or requirements about what can be built in your area.

Is adding joint sand part of the installation process?

Once the pavers have dried, it’s time to sweep in sand between the joints. Depending on what type of paver you used, this could also be done with Polymeric Jointing Sand which hardens when wet and prevents weed growth. However for our heavily textured stones (such as Il Campo), we don’t recommend using that option because they will get damaged too easily from regular use .
